How it's made

How to make an easy crochet cat

You'll crochet a head, a body, two pointed ears, two front legs, two back legs and one long tail — the usual amigurumi shapes, all in single crochet in the round.

Start with the head and body, then the ears as small cones and the tail as a tapering tube. Stuff as you go, sew the head to the body, position the ears, and add safety eyes and an embroidered nose and whiskers.

The numbers below are generated from your finished size and gauge, so the pieces stay in proportion — no guesswork, no counts that drift. The photo shows amigurumi like this; your make follows the exact pieces in the pattern.

What you'll need

  • Main-colour yarn (grey, ginger, black…) + a hook that matches the gauge below
  • A scrap of pink for the nose
  • 2 safety eyes (or black yarn to embroider) and black yarn for the nose & whiskers
  • Stuffing, stitch marker, tapestry needle
  • A stitch marker, a tapestry needle, scissors, and toy stuffing

Gauge — read this first

24 sc × 20 rounds = 10 cm, worked tightly so the stuffing doesn't show. Use whatever yarn and hook give you this gauge — for the default that's worsted/aran yarn with about a 3.0–3.5 mmhook. Make a small swatch and change hook size until it matches; off-gauge isn't wrong, the piece just comes out a little bigger or smaller.

Assembly

Put it all together

Use a tapestry needle and matching yarn. Pin pieces in place before sewing.

  1. Stuff the head and body firmly.
  2. Sew the head onto the top of the body.
  3. Sew the two pointed ears to the top of the head.
  4. Sew the front legs to the lower front.
  5. Sew the back legs to the lower sides.
  6. Sew the tail to the lower back, curving it to one side.

Finishing touches

  • Fit the safety eyes on the face before you close the head (or embroider them).
  • Embroider a small pink nose, a mouth and whiskers.
  • Optionally add stripes in a second colour as you work each part.
