Building blocks

Ten building blocks for amigurumi.

Each is a deterministic shape you can resize and combine into custom parts. A few share the same underlying stitch math — we say so plainly — but every one is shaped and used differently.

Round forms

Balls, eggs and domes — the bodies and heads.

Beginner

Sphere

A round ball worked from a magic ring out to its middle, then mirrored closed. The building block for anything round.

Good for

  • Heads
  • Eyes
  • Balls
  • Berries
Beginner

Oval / ellipsoid

A stretched sphere — round ends with a longer body between them. Ideal for anything egg-shaped or chubby.

Good for

  • Bodies
  • Heads
  • Snouts
  • Muzzles
Beginner

Hemisphere / dome

A domed half-sphere left open at the base. Sits like a cap, a shell, or a rounded top.

Good for

  • Heads
  • Caps
  • Shells
  • Rounded tops
Intermediate

Egg / teardrop

A rounded base that narrows to a softer point — an asymmetric, organic drop shape.

Good for

  • Bodies
  • Noses
  • Drops
  • Buds
Beginner

Flattened ball

The ball's reliable stitch math, kept low and wide so it sits on a flat base — a cushion or a cheek rather than a marble.

Good for

  • Cheeks
  • Cushions
  • Paws
  • Macarons

Tubes & cones

Straight, tapered and pointed — the limbs and horns.

Beginner

Cylinder

A flat round base and straight sides — left open like a tube or closed at the top.

Good for

  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Tubes
  • Pots
Intermediate

Cone

Worked tip-first and widened evenly out to an open base. The go-to for anything pointed.

Good for

  • Hats
  • Horns
  • Beaks
  • Tails
Intermediate

Capsule / rounded tube

A straight tube capped by a rounded dome at each end — the most limb-like shape, smooth and even.

Good for

  • Limbs
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Soft tubes
Intermediate

Tapered cylinder

A cone-like tube running from one diameter to another. Closed at the wide base, open at the narrow end.

Good for

  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Tails
  • Necks

Flat pieces

Discs that lie flat — the bases and patches.

Beginner

Flat circle / disc

Just the increase half of a ball — a flat disc that stays flat. The simplest shape, and a base for everything else.

Good for

  • Bases
  • Patches
  • Eyes
  • Coasters
Intermediate

Flat teardrop

A flat leaf/paddle worked back-and-forth in rows — widening to the middle, then tapering to a soft point. The flat building block for wings, flippers, fins and ears.

Good for

  • Wings
  • Flippers
  • Fins
  • Ears
