This elephant has real character: a round head and body, two large flat ears worked in rows, a long tapering trunk and four sturdy legs. Grey, blue-grey or soft pink all work beautifully.

How it's made

How to make an easy crochet elephant

You'll crochet a head, a body, two big flat ears, a tapering trunk, four legs and two small tusks.

Work the head and body as firm spheres, sew the wide edge of each ear to the sides of the head, attach the trunk to the centre of the face, and add the legs. Finish with safety eyes either side of the trunk.

What you'll need

  • Main-colour yarn (grey, blue-grey or pink) + a hook that matches the gauge below
  • A scrap of cream for the tusks
  • 2 safety eyes (or black yarn to embroider)
  • Stuffing, stitch marker, tapestry needle
  • A stitch marker, a tapestry needle, scissors, and toy stuffing

Gauge — read this first

24 sc × 20 rounds = 10 cm, worked tightly so the stuffing doesn't show. Use whatever yarn and hook give you this gauge — for the default that's worsted/aran yarn with about a 3.0–3.5 mmhook. Make a small swatch and change hook size until it matches; off-gauge isn't wrong, the piece just comes out a little bigger or smaller.

Assembly

Put it all together

Use a tapestry needle and matching yarn. Pin pieces in place before sewing.

  1. Stuff the head, body, trunk and legs firmly.
  2. Sew the head onto the top of the body.
  3. Sew the wide edge of each flat ear to the sides of the head.
  4. Sew the trunk to the centre of the face.
  5. Sew the four legs to the base of the body.
  6. Sew the two tusks below the trunk.

Finishing touches

  • Fit the safety eyes either side of the trunk before closing the head (or embroider them).
  • Add a short yarn tail at the back; weave in all ends.
  • 2 safety eyes, or embroidered in black (black)
