A chubby whale with flat tail flukes, side flippers and a pale belly.

The whale is worked on its side: one big oval body, two flat tail flukes, two side flippers and a pale belly panel. Lovely in blue or grey, and quick to finish.

How it's made

How to make an easy crochet whale

You'll crochet a long oval body, two flat flukes, two flippers and a flat belly panel — single crochet in the round for the body, worked in rows for the flat pieces.

Stuff the body fatter at the front and narrower at the tail, sew the flukes to the tail tip and the flippers to the sides, and add the belly panel underneath. Finish with safety eyes near the front.

What you'll need

  • Main-colour yarn (blue or grey) + a hook that matches the gauge below
  • Cream or pale grey for the belly
  • 2 safety eyes (or black yarn to embroider)

Gauge — read this first

24 sc × 20 rounds = 10 cm, worked tightly so the stuffing doesn't show. Use whatever yarn and hook give you this gauge — for the default that's worsted/aran yarn with about a 3.0–3.5 mmhook. Make a small swatch and change hook size until it matches; off-gauge isn't wrong, the piece just comes out a little bigger or smaller.

Assembly

Put it all together

Use a tapestry needle and matching yarn. Pin pieces in place before sewing.

  1. Stuff the body firmly and shape it fatter at the front, narrower at the tail.
  2. Sew the two flukes together at their narrow ends, then sew to the tail tip.
  3. Sew a flipper low on each side of the body.
  4. Sew the flat belly panel along the underside.

Finishing touches

  • Fit the safety eyes near the front of the body before closing it (or embroider them).
  • Optionally add a white yarn spout at the top; weave in all ends.
  • 2 safety eyes, or embroidered in black (black)
