How it's made

How to make an easy crochet penguin

You'll crochet a body, a head (or a body-and-head in one), a flat belly panel, a cone beak, two flippers and two little feet.

Work the body as a firm stuffed oval, sew the pale belly to the front, add the beak and flippers, and finish with safety eyes. The webbed feet keep it standing.

What you'll need

  • Main-colour yarn (black, navy or grey) + a hook that matches the gauge below
  • Cream or white for the belly
  • A scrap of orange for the beak and feet
  • 2 safety eyes (or black yarn to embroider)
  • Stuffing, stitch marker, tapestry needle
  • A stitch marker, a tapestry needle, scissors, and toy stuffing

Gauge — read this first

24 sc × 20 rounds = 10 cm, worked tightly so the stuffing doesn't show. Use whatever yarn and hook give you this gauge — for the default that's worsted/aran yarn with about a 3.0–3.5 mmhook. Make a small swatch and change hook size until it matches; off-gauge isn't wrong, the piece just comes out a little bigger or smaller.

Assembly

Put it all together

Use a tapestry needle and matching yarn. Pin pieces in place before sewing.

  1. Stuff the body and head firmly.
  2. Sew the head onto the narrow top of the body.
  3. Sew the flat belly patch to the front of the body.
  4. Sew a flipper to each side where the head meets the body.
  5. Sew the two feet to the base.
  6. Sew the beak to the centre of the face.

Finishing touches

  • Fit the safety eyes above the beak before closing the head (or embroider them).
  • Weave in all ends; pinch the feet flat so the penguin stands.
  • 2 safety eyes, or embroidered in black (black)
